The Empty Bench traces the events surrounding an unpredictable family reunion that was to take place in Karachi, Pakistan. Set against the domestic backdrop of family gardens, drying laundry, three months of phone calls and varying means of visual communication, the work gradually reveals the complexities of everyday life. Although the physical distances and long-term absences have had direct consequences on their personal lives and relationships, they simultaneously manage to stay intertwined.
